Wellman-Jonathan James Smithers was born August 16 1985 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of David and Joyce (Condon) Smithers. He attended Mid-Prairie Elementary before being home schooled through 12th grade. He was an Eagle Scout with Wellman Troop #236 of the Boy Scouts. For his Eagle Scout project, he posted nature signs in Hayes Timber in Washington County, Iowa. A veteran of the Iraq War, Jonathan enlist in the U.S. Army in 2005, attaining the rank of sergeant. He faced combat in Sadr City, Baghdad in 2007, and was discharged in 2008. After his service, he worked as a biomedical technician and maintained a close relationship with fellow veterans. Jonathan was loved by his family and friends, and will be missed. Jonathan passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017 in Lenexa, KS at the age of 31 years.
He is survived by his parents: David and Joyce Smithers; two brothers: Matthew and Nicholas Smithers all of Wellman.
