John Wertz Miller was born August 12, 1922 in Kalona, Iowa the son of Urie and Amanda (Wertz) Miller. He graduated from Center High School in 1942 and attended Hesston College. On October 4, 1944 he was united in marriage to Arlene Hochstetler at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. They lived in Iowa City for 57 years where John was employed for Sieg Auto Supply for 39 years until his retirement in 1988. They moved to Kalona in 2001. He was an active member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church and the Model A Car Club. He enjoyed volunteering at the Crowded Closet and working on cars. John died on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona following a long illness at the age of 84 years. John is survived by his wife Arlene of Kalona; 2 daughters - Jane Gingerich of Punta Gorda, Florida; Julie Derstine and husband Daryl of Blooming Glen, Pennsylvania; 4 grandchildren Todd Gingerich and wife Jennifer, Wade Gingerich and wife Aimee, Rachel Derstine and Ingrid Derstine; and a sister - Kathryn Yoder of Kalona. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial fund has been established for Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church and Water For Life.
