John Morris Williams

John Morris Williams, 79, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2008, at his home. Due to the inclimate forcast for Thursday, the location of the service has been changed. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 12th at 10:30 a.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with Pastor Duke Crawford officiating. Inurnment will be in the Winfield Scott-Township Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Memorials have been established to the Great River Hospice or to the Calvary Baptist Church. Born November 24, 1928, in Columbus Junction, IA, John Morris, was the son of David T. and Grace Z. Clark Williams. Morris attended Shellbark Country School in Columbus Junction and the Winfield Grade School. He was a graduate of the Pleasant Lawn Consolidated School. On June 13, 1948, he married Velma Valentine Mathews in Mt. Pleasant. In 1953, Morris entered the military and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged in 1955, having obtained the rank of Private First Class. After his discharge he farmed with his father on the family farm northeast of Mt. Pleasant. In 1957, the Williams bought their own farm northwest of Mt. Pleasant. Morris also became a radiology technician and worked at the Washington County Hospital and the Henry County Hospital for eight years at each hospital. For 19 years, Morris and Velma owned and operated the AW Drive-In in Washington, IA. The couple wintered in Florida in the off season. Morris was a member of the national and state organizations for radiology technologist. An avid Cub fan, Morris loved to watch baseball on television and always enjoyed golfing with his friends after his retirement. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant. Along with his wife, Velma, Morris is survived by two sisters Leila (John) Carlo of Ottumwa, IA, and Carol Mills of Houston, TX; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his parents.
