John Monnett Gibbens, age 78, of Madison, WI, died Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at Stoughton Hospital, from complications of pneumonia. Born to John Donald and Helen Monnett Gibbens on September 1, 1927, he attended the North English, Iowa schools, Simpson College, and Iowa State University. John did his graduate work under the late Earl Heady at Iowa State, receiving the Ph.D. in 1964. He served on the faculty of the College of Business and Economics at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater from 1961 to 1993. John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Myna Hughes Gibbens, sons Jeffrey and James, brother Dean and his wife Martha of Lincoln, Nebraska and their children Mary Beth, Joyce, Don, Matthew, Martin, and Leslie, their husbands, wives, and children; by cousins; and by in-laws Myrna Johnson, Russell Arvid (Julie) Hughes, Dorothy Hughes and their families. John was preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles, his cousins John Grubb, Maxine Grubb, Elizabeth Grubb Grobeck, and Duane Grubb; and by brothers-in-law Arlen F. Hughes, Robert Johnson, and Allen Jackson Hughes. Family and friends will gather at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 23, 2006, at the Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service in North English, IA before preceding to the North English Cemetery for committal. Memorials may be made to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater College of Business and Economics Scholarship Fund for Economics majors, Whitewater, WI, 53190.
