John R. "Jack" Hawks, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the Henry County Health Center Emergency Room. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. A funeral mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Joseph Phung, celebrant. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Creston, IA, at 2:30 p.m., later that day. Memorials may be given to PAWS, an animal rescue organization. On line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com Born in Creston, IA, on October 22, 1931, John Richard was the son of Bernard and Florence Grupp Hawks. He was raised by his Aunt Helen and Uncle George Johnson of Creston, IA, after the accidental death of his father in 1936. He was a 1950 graduate of Creston High School. Jack served in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954 and was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. On June 3, 1953, in Greenfield, IA, Jack married Ann Roeder who lived north of Creston, IA. Following high school, Jack worked as a meat cutter. After being discharged from the Army, he continued his 20-year career as a meat cutter for private meat markets before going to work for John Morrell in Estherville, IA. At the closure of the Morrell plant in Estherville Jack worked for the Iowa State Liquor Stores until they were closed by the state. In the late 80s, he moved to Mt. Pleasant to work at the Correctional Facility until the time of his retirement in 1997. Jack was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Mt. Pleasant and previously an active member at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Milford, IA. For many years he was a scoutmaster for his son's Boy Scout Troop in Arnolds Park, IA, and was proud that he took the troop on a canoe trip to Canada. He was a member of the school board and board of adjustment in Arnolds Park, IA. Jack was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and canoeing. Along with his loving wife, Ann, of 62 years, Jack is survived by a son, Michael Hawks of Sioux Falls, SD; three grandchildren, Patrick (Christine) Hawks, Benjamin Hawks, and Kathleen Hawks; a brother, James (Ann) Hawks of Runnemede, NJ; and several nieces and nephews.
