Wellman-John H. Vincent was born July 18, 1930 near Washington, Iowa, the son of J. Homer and Myrtle E. Booth Vincent. He graduated from Wellman High School in 1949. John served in the US Army from 1951 to 1953. He was united in marriage to Shirley Schwaigert on June 22, 1957 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was a life long resident of the Wellman area were he was a farmer and a rural mail carrier for over 30 years. While active with his children he was also active in the community, serving on the Wellman Telephone Board, working on the centennial committee and various other committees, along with being a member of the American Legion in Wellman and the Eagles in Iowa City. John died Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at the Windmill Manor in Coralville after a brief illness at the age of 75 years. He is survived by two sons: Thomas (Georgia) Vincent of Perry, Steve (Sue) Vincent of Cedar Rapid; a daughter: Karen (Craig) Kaalberg of Davenport; six grandchildren: Allison and Dan Vincent, Quinn, Sam and Conner Vincent and Shay Kaalberg; a sister: Margaret Ann Scott of Wellman; a brother: Gene (Arlene) Vincent of Bettendorf; a sister-in-law: Rose Marie (Jack) Ruth of Iowa City; a brother-in-law: Richard Schwaigert of North Liberty and a special friend: Shirley Hotz of Coralville. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley in 1983, and a grandson Marcus James. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00a.m. Friday, August 5, 2005 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman. Fr. Nick Adam will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are for the Wellman Library or Wellman Senior Center.
