SIGOURNEY-Jo Anne Higgins, age 87, of Bonita Springs, Florida, formerly of Sigourney, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, at the Life Care Center in Estero, Florida, following a brief illness. Jo Anne was born September 29, 1918, near Keswick, Iowa, to Leo and Griselda (Schultz) Higgins. She grew up in the Sigourney area and graduated from Keswick High School in 1935. Jo Anne then attended A.I.B. in Des Moines, graduating in 1937. She worked as a stenographer in Des Moines for several years and also in New York City a short time. She then returned to her farm, "Sycamore," in rural Sigourney. She sold the farm and moved to Florida in the early 1980's. Jo Anne enjoyed doing handwork and was an avid reader and library patron. Survivors include one sister: Raechel Axmear of Keswick and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at the funeral chapel. A memorial fund has been established for the Lewis Memorial Fountain or the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
