Jewell "J.C." Boyd, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Thursday, March 05, 2009, at his home after a courageous 5 year battle with cancer. Visitation will be held from 12:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant where the family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. that afternoon. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 9, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Robin McCullar officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Ft. Madison, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society. Born July 19, 1922, in Macon, MO, Jewell Clayton was the son of George and Goldie Hoskins Boyd. J.C. graduated from Ft. Madison High School in 1940. On May 8, 1948, he married Virginia Ardith Ross in Burlington, IA. Mr. Boyd served in the United States Navy in the Philippines Islands during World War II. After his discharge from the service he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and later as an auto body technician. He worked for Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in the Fire Department. He was a certified EMT. He retired as a Captain after 30 plus years of service at the plant. J.C. served as a minister of the Pentecostal Church of God in Kahoka, MO, and surrounding area churches. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting, bow hunting, and trapping. He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Arizona for a few winters and loved spending time with friends and especially his family. Along with his wife, Virginia of Mt. Pleasant, he is survived by one son, Lynn (Martie) Boyd of Danville, IA; one daughter, Linda Jones of West Des Moines, IA; one sister, Zelpha (Kenneth) Campbell of Burlington, IA; and one daughter-in-law, Barbara Boyd of Rockford, IL. Also surviving are four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Paul Boyd; one sister, Gwen Boyd; and by one son, Larry Boyd.
