Jerry L. Sammons, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2019, at Park Place Elder Living.
Visitation will begin after 12 noon on Monday, June 24, 2019, at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Jeff McPheron officiating. Burial will be at White Oak Cemetery near Trenton, IA. Born November 11, 1934, in Rome, IA, Jerry Lee was the son on Floyd and Gladys Olive (White) Sammons. He spent his formative years in Rome, was a 1953 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, and has lived in Mt. Pleasant ever since. On July 4, 1953, Jerry married Melva Elizabeth Hill in Mt. Pleasant.
Retiring in 1998, Jerry worked as a material checker at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for Mason and Hanger American Ordinance for 47 years. He served in the National Guard for several years.
Jerry was a member of Trenton Methodist Church, where he served in leadership roles and on many committees. When his boys were young, he was a Little League coach and umpire. For over forty years, Jerry volunteered at Old Threshers in the souvenir shack. In his younger years, he worked crossword puzzles and later enjoyed 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles. Jerry was a NASCAR, Hawkeye, and Cubs fan. He was an avid reader and a collector of salt and pepper shakers, of which he had over 1000 sets.
Along with his loving wife, Melva, of 65 years, Jerry is survived by four children, Steve (Debi) Sammons of Trenton, IA, Tim (Bonnie) Sammons, Kristi (Dale) Wohlleber, and Doug Sammons, all of Mt. Pleasant, IA; two brothers, Gary (Bev) Sammons of Burlington, IA and Terry (Christi) Sammons of Mt. Pleasant, IA; and four sisters, Ramona (Jim) Colvin of Ottumwa, IA, Sandra (Richard) Paul of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Donna (Jim) Baxter of Atlanta, GA, and Debra Sammons of Rome, IA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael Sammons, Juston Sammons, Angie Farnsworth, Brad Sammons, Andy Wohlleber, and Danny Wohlleber; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey Wohlleber.
