Janice Crissman

OTTUMWA-Jan Crissman, age 86, of Ottumwa, died Thursday, November 21, 2024, at her home.

Jan was born April 19, 1938, in Williamsburg, Iowa, to Martin and Eunice (Arp) Schroeder. She graduated from Sigourney High School in 1956 and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa in 1960. She then worked in the psychiatric ward at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City for a few years, earning the head nurse position for two of those years. After college, she married Robert S. Crissman and they divorced in 1976. She has lived in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia and Australia. Jan then worked in the pediatric department at Ottumwa Regional Hospital from 1977 until 1979 before becoming a nursing instructor at Indian Hills Community College for 24 years. Jan served on the Hospice Board of Directors and was a C.A.S.A. (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for several years. She was a paper crafter who made beautiful cards that she shared with all of her friends. Jan enjoyed playing Bunko, the Red Hat Society, her card club, and socializing with her former nursing coworkers.

Survivors include one son: Mark (Tammy) Crissman of The Woodlands, Texas; four grandchildren: Kathleen, Mirinda, Jackie and Grace; sister-in-law: Marilyn Schroeder of Sigourney; nephews: Randy (Jody) Schroeder and Terry (Missy) Schroeder and cousin: Lois Jean Arp of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother: Larry Schroeder and nephew: Bruce Schroeder.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
