James Ray Simmons, age 76, of Marengo, passed away Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Rose Haven Nursing Home. Private family services will be held at a later date. The public is invited to Fireside Winery, Marengo, from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 3, 2021. Memorials may be sent to Carole Simmons, c/o Kloster Funeral Home, 298 W. James is survived by his wife Carole of 56 years; two sons, Deron Simmons, of Huntersville, NC, and Justin (Nicole) Simmons, of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Greta, Maisie, Henry and Logan; two brothers Robert (Ava) Simmons, of Marengo, and William (Pam) Simmons, of Marengo; two sisters Mary (Nick) Roggentien, of Marengo, and Joan (Joe) Seye, of Marengo; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by is parents, a brother Ron and his grandparents, Lloyd and Lola Simmons.
James was born August 5, 1944, in Waco, Texas, the son of Robert and Lillian (Furlong) Simmons. He graduated from Iowa Valley High School, and attended the University of Iowa. James was united in marriage to Carole Lorenz in 1965, in Williamsburg. The couple made their home in Iowa City, and later moved to Marengo. James worked at Amana Refrigeration for 30 plus years and later worked at Coon Creek Telephone until he retired. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, in Marengo and served as the Church Council President. James was also a member and board member of the Marengo Golf Course and the Iowa Valley School Board. He enjoyed golfing and more golfing and was also the Golf Club Champion. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife Carole. James loved spending time with his family attending his grandchildren’s’ events.
