James McCabe, 92, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Saturday, August 2, 2014, at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant. An open visitation will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014 from 12 - 7 p.m. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where friends may sign the registration book. A funeral mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with The Rev. Joseph Phung and The Rev. Steve Witt officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the mass in the gathering space at St. Alphonsus. Inurnment will be at a later date at St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Memorials have been established to St. Alphonsus Youth Ministry and Iowa Public Television. James T. McCabe, son of Tom and Mary Ryan McCabe was born in Marengo, Iowa, on December 25, 1921. His family moved to Victor, Iowa for a short time and then to Mt. Pleasant. He was a 1940 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, and attended Iowa Wesleyan College for one year before enlisting in the Army Air Corps, where he served during World War II as a pilot. It was during his service that he developed his love of flying. He married Genevieve Steffl in 1948 in Davenport, Iowa. He was a 1949 graduate of St. Ambrose College with a degree in Economics. After moving to Mt. Pleasant, he worked for Investors Diversified Services and Conway Brothers Investments. In 1965 he founded Arnet-McCabe Co., a full service independent brokerage firm. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Parish, a member of the parish council and the Knights of Columbus, and he was Co-Chairman of the committee that constructed St. Alphonsus Grade School. He was a member of the International Comanche Society, an international organization of private pilots. He was a member of American Legion Post #58, a former Chairman of the Mt. Pleasant Planning and Zoning Committee and the National Parliamentarian Association. He was Chairman of the 1960 Iowa John F. Kennedy presidential campaign and he was instrumental in the creation of the Mt. Pleasant High School Wrestling Program. He is survived by his wife; seven children, James (Debbie) of Los Altos, CA, Patrick (Brenda) of Mt. Pleasant, Jean (Kevin Wilson) of Kansas City, Daniel (Brenda) of Mt. Pleasant, Tom (Kate) of Singapore, Mary (Kevin) Sutherby, of Philadelphia, PA and Joanne (Peter) McCranie of Charlotte, NC; twelve grandchildren; one great grandchild; and two step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary; one brother, Tom; and a daughter-in-law, Pam.
