North English- James Junior (Jimmy) Phillips was born December 1, 1930 near Fremont, Iowa, the son of James and Bonnie (Lisk) Phillips. He grew up in rural Keokuk and Mahaska counties and attended Craig rural school. Jimmy was united in marriage to Marjorie Hester Van Halm on July 1, 1960 in Eddyville. They lived in Delta for two years and then moved to North English in 1962. Jimmy worked at Amana Refrigeration on the assembly line for 40 years, retiring in 1995. He enjoyed drawing, gardening and music. He was a member of the North English United Methodist Church. Jimmy died Sunday, October 13, 2019 at the English Valley Care Center in North English at the age of 88.
He is survived by four sons, Leonard (Sandra) Phillips of North English, Oren (Lori) Phillips of Pella, Steve Phillips of Kalona and Matthew (Kari) Phillips of North Liberty; 6 granddaughters, a grandson, 2 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Doris McGee of Oskaloosa and Barb Trenk of What Cheer, a sister-in-law Jessie Phillips of Hedrick, numerous nieces and nephews and a special caregiver Michele Phillips.
He was preceded by his parents, wife Marge, sisters Irene Kelley, Ruth Winner, Mildred Hedlund, Nellie Phillips and Arlene Phillips in infancy, and brothers Carl, Bill and John Phillips.
Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Thursday, October 17, 2019 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Memorials are for Essence of Life Hospice or English Valley Care Center.
