WILLIAMSBURG- James A. Harl, was born on October 1, 1928, in Seymour, Iowa, the son of John T. and Louise (Walker) Harl. He attended Hayes Country School in Appanoose County and Graduated from Seymour High School in 1946. On August 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Wilma Bettis in Seymour. He farmed and in 1953 he became a distributor for Standard Oil where he worked for 38 years. In 1955, Jim & Wilma established their home and business in Casey, Iowa, where they lived until 2004, when they moved to the Highland Ridge Senior Living Community in Williamsburg. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Casey. He was a 50 year member of the Purity Masonic Lodge in Casey, a 25 year member of the Casey Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as chief, he served as Mayor of Casey and on the Casey City Council. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple in Des Moines and a 4-H Leader. He enjoyed camping, attending the State Fair, horse and cattle farming, and playing poker with his friends. Jim died on Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, following a brief illness at the age of 80 years. He is survived by his wife Wilma of Williamsburg; a son Eldon (Julie) Harl of Williamsburg; 2 daughters- Barbara (Bruce) Hutton of Mount Ayr, IA and Marilyn (Lee) Manning of Phoenix, AZ; 4 granddaughters; 1 great granddaughter; a sister- Julia Anne McGavran of Urbana, IL; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Rose Marie Harl. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Pastor James Parks will officiate. Graveside services will be 3:30 pm on Saturday, at the South Lawn Cemetery in Seymour, Iowa Visitation will be on Friday, from 4-8 pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service. A memorial fund has been established for the Casey Volunteer Fire Department or the Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department.
