Williamsburg-James Benton (Doc) Garringer was born October 6, 1925, near Parnell, Iowa, the son of John D. and Bertha I. (Claypool) Garringer. He attended Yankee Point and Parnell High School. He served in the US Army during WWII. On January 24, 1948, he was united in marriage to Anne Welsh. He was a life long farmer and resident of Iowa County, after they were married, they moved to the farm southwest of Williamsburg and in 2005 they moved to Highland Ridge Community in Williamsburg. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, a life member of the Iburg Poulson VFW Post 8797 and American Legion. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and grandchildren. Doc died on Thursday, October 29, 2009, at the Highland Ridge Care Center, in Williamsburg, at the age of 84 years. He is survived by his wife Anne of Williamsburg; 6 children: Kenneth Garringer of Williamsburg, Patty Garringer of Millersburg, Mary and husband Don Grimm of Williamsburg, Jan and husband Steve Fick of Cedar Rapids; Ray and wife Fonda Garringer, and Paul and wife Chris Garringer all of Williamsburg; 9 grandchildren: Mitch Fick, Ashley (Brandon) Dietrich, Bryson Garringer, Rachel Fick, Trenton Garringer, Lance Garringer, Austin Hilligas, Anna Garringer and Breanne Garringer, and 2 brothers: Charles (Jan) Garringer of Conroy and Dean (Gwen) Garringer of Phillips NE. He was preceded in death by his parents and 8 brothers: Glenn, Donald, Al, Marvin, Frances, Arnold, Robert and Ronald. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 am on Monday, November 2, 2009, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Williamsburg. Fr. Joseph Roost will preside. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Williamsburg with Military Rites. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg, where there will be a VFW service at 7 pm and a Rosary Service immediately following. A memorial fund has been established for the St. Mary's Cemetery Fund or donor's choice. Messages and tributes may be left www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries.
