John Wesley Hochstedler was born November 24, 1930 near Kalona, Iowa the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Otto) Hochstedler. On March 22, 1953 he was united in marriage to Alice Gingerich at the Fairview Mennonite Church near Kalona. He has lived most of his life in the Kalona community where he farmed and was a Lynks seed dealer for many years. He was a member of the Sunnyside Mennonite Church where he taught Sunday School and served on many committees. He volunteered with Mennonite Disaster Service. He enjoyed music and sang in a men's chorus for many years. Wesley died on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at his home near Kalona following a long illness at the age of 76 years. Wesley is survived by his wife Alice of Kalona; 7 children - Joy Miller (Leon) of Haiti; Leon Hochstedler (Fran) of Delaware, Ohio; Doyle Hochstedler (Becky) of Kalona; Audrey Miller (Dale) of Iowa City; Myron Hochstedler (Cathie) of Kalona; Phyllis Miller (Mark) of Mechanicsburg, Ohio; Virginia Wenger (Phil) of Wellman; 24 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 6 sisters - Alta Kropf (Victor) of Halsey, Oregon; Lydia Hochstedler, Martha Helmuth, Lovina Hochstedler, Viola Hochstedler all of Kalona; Darlene Miller (John) of Hutchinson, Kansas; and 3 brothers - Jonas Hochstedler (Ann) of Kalona; Monroe Hochstedler (Ruby) of Tallahassee, Florida; and Nelson Hochstedler (Lavina) of Grand Blanc, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandchild Ryan Hochstedler; and 4 sisters - Ruth Hochstedler, Cora Hochstedler, Verna Hochstedler and Mary Alice Hochstedler. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2007 at the Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. With Pastor's John King, Floyd Helmuth and David L. Yoder officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday and after 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends on Friday and from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Saturday. A Memorial fund has been established for the Sunnyside Mennonite Church and Water For Life.
