Iva Idella Brenneman was born January 28, 1919 near Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Mahlon and Kate (Miller) Schlabaugh. On December 29, 1940 she was united in marriage to Dale Brenneman in Kalona. Idella has lived in the Kalona community all of her life where she was a homemaker. She was a charter member of the Sunnyside Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School and was active in the Women's Sewing Circle. She volunteered at the Crowded Closet. Idella enjoyed quilting, flower gardening, and spending time at the cabin with family and friends. The most important part of her life was her family, especially her grandchildren. Idella died on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 94 years. Idella is survived by three daughters - Carolyn Brenneman; Elaine Brenneman; Joyce (Lloyd) Bender; a son Richard (Chris) Brenneman all of Kalona; a daughter-in-law Lucinda (George) Hoskins of Wellman; nine grandchildren - Rodney Bender, Heather Bender, Heidi (Andrew) Willems, Elizabeth (Stephen) Fay, Cody (Kelcey) Brenneman, Amanda (Troy) West, Nicholas (Jocelyn) Brenneman, Tyler Brenneman, Patrick Brenneman; six great grandchildren - Makenzie Fay, Aubrey Fay, Chloe Fay, Simon Willems, Sawyer Brenneman, Eden Willems; two sisters - Gladys Schlabaugh, Barbara Schlabach; and two brothers - Omar Schlabaugh and Emil Schlabaugh all of Kalona. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dale, a son Gordon, and two brothers - Ralph and Delmar. Memorial Services will be held at 3:00 PM Monday, January 6, 2014 at the Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Kalona. Pastor Floyd Yutzy, Pastor Floyd Helmuth and Chaplain John King will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Monday at the South Gingerich Cemetery in rural Kalona. Visitation will be held from 1-7 PM on Sunday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 1-4 and 5-7 PM. A memorial fund has been established for Kalona First Responders and Iowa City Hospice.
