North English- Irene M. Smith was born August 25, 1921 near Sigourney, Iowa, the daughter of Roy and Minnie (Cox) Horras. She lived in Sigourney until the age of 13 when she moved with her family to Iowa County. Irene graduated from Millersburg High School in 1939. Irene and her twin sister Arlene were united in marriage to brothers C. Leroy Smith and Melvin Smith in a double wedding ceremony on September 21, 1940 in Killduff, Iowa. The couple farmed in Iowa County near Millersburg until retiring to North English in 1993. Irene enjoyed quilting, sewing and baby-sitting. Irene died Saturday, September 8, 2007 at the English Valley Care Center in North English after a brief illness at the age of 86 years. Irene is survived by her husband Leroy; four children: Janet Betz and husband Douglas of Ankeny, Garry Smith and wife Marjorie of Williamsburg, Judy Shrout and husband David of Cynthiana, KY and Pastor. Marvin Smith and wife Kathy of Tucson, AZ.; 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Dale, Orville, Howard and Marvin Horras and her twin sister: Arlene Smith. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will be in the Community Cemetery near Deep River. Pastor Marvin Smith will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Memorials are for the Community Church, English Valley Care Center or the East Iowa Bible Camp.
