WELLMAN - Irene Cordelle Groff was born November 28, 1915 in Wellman, Iowa the daughter of Edward and Minnie (Perrin) Blumenstein. She graduated from Wellman High School in 1934. On April 14, 1940 she was united in marriage to Willard Groff in Iowa City. Irene has lived in the Wellman community all of her life. She cleaned homes in Iowa City for 12 years and worked at the University of Iowa Hospital for 12 years. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Irene died on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 93 years. Irene is survived by a son: Ron (Cindy) Groff of Wellman; two daughters: Sharrie Groff of Wellman; Darlene Gingerich of Iowa City; 8 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers: Wayne, Merle and Clayton, and two sisters: Marjorie Miller and Vonetta Brannon. Graveside services will be 10:30 am Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Wellman Cemetery. Rev. Marlene Janssen will officiate. Visitation will be Monday from 2:00 to 8:00pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman. Memorials are for the Wellman Ambulance or the Iowa City Hospice.
