Iola "Ikey" Oard

Iola A. "Ikey" Oard, 84, of Burlington, IA, formerly of Keokuk and Mt. Union, died Saturday, August 26, 2006, at the Solon Nursing Home, in Solon, IA, where she had lived since February of 2006. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2006, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Memorial Chapel with the Pastor Kirk Bennett officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the West Avenue Baptist Church and to the Iowa City Hospice. On line condolences may be sent to www.olsonpowell.com Born May 12, 1922, in Burnside, IL, Iola was the daughter of Delley Clay and Bertha Ellen Barzee McDermeit. On May 8, 1938, she married Robert Eugene Oard. He preceded her in death on February 14, 1995. Mrs. Oard worked as a secretary for the Mt Union Co-op Elevator for eight years. Iola then worked as a secretary in Cedar Rapids. The Oards later lived in Newton and Colfax. Along with her husband, Ikey managed the Holiday Terrace Apartments in Keokuk for 12 years and retired in Burlington. Iola was a member of the Mt. Union Baptist Church where she played the piano. She transferred her membership to the West Avenue Baptist Church in Burlington. Ikey enjoyed crocheting, knitting, working on various crafts and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Mrs. Oard is survived by one daughter, Nancy Lou and her husband Wes Fotsch of Solon, IA; five grandchildren, George Kelley Gipple and his wife Debbie of Overland Park, KS, Jennifer Ann and her husband Matt Freeman of Scottsdale, AZ, Ryan Ray Gipple and his wife Kindra of Chandler, AZ, Robert Todd Oard of Kansas City, MO, and Rodney Alan Oard of Eureka, IL. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren. Iola was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert, one son Robert Eugene Oard, Jr.; one grandson, Anthony "Tony" Oard; one brother, Joseph Almon McDermeit, and by two sisters, Edna Pearl Holz and Louella Mae Banks.
