WELLMAN- Howard Ray Yoder was born December 23, 1924 in rural Parnell, Iowa, the son of Henry and Bertha (Doolin) Yoder. He attended White Hall country school. Howard served in the United States Army in the Rainbow Division during WWII. On January 12, 1947 Howard was united in marriage to Eleanor Swartzendruber at the West Union Mennonite Church. Howard farmed in the Wellman area for 47 years. He was a member of the West Union Mennonite Church where he served as trustee and Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed wood carving, basket weaving, chair caning and wood working projects. Howard passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2016 at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 91 years.
Howard is survived by his wife Eleanor of Wellman; six children: H. Douglas Yoder of Lakewood, CO; Steven (Becky) Yoder of Kalona; Lucinda (George) Hoskins of Wellman; John Howard (Joni) Yoder of Wellman; Barbara (Keith) Martin of Newton, KS; Melissa (Ron) Thomas of Louisville, KY; daughter-in-law Vici Yoder of Littleton, CO; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 4 brothers: Kenneth (Dorothy) Yoder of Wellman; Carl (Laverta) Yoder of Wellman; Gordon (Norma)Yoder of Dayton, VA; and Walter (Jean)Yoder of North Branch, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law Gordon Brenneman; a brother Warren Yoder; a sister Dorothy Messick and a infant sister.
Celebration of Life Service will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the West Union Mennonite Church in rural Parnell. Pastor Corey Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the West Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 PM on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at the West Union Mennonite Church. A memorial fund has been established for West Union Mennonite Church and Iowa Mennonite School. The Powell Funeral Home is caring for Howard and his family.
