WEST CHESTER - Marlyn "Hoddy" Lyle Allen was born February 28, 1924 in Wellman, Iowa, the son of Glenn Thomas and Emma Mae (Perrin) Allen. He attended Wellman High School. He served one year in the Civilian Conservation Corp and then enlisted in the Unites States Marine Corp and proudly served his country from 1942-1946 in the South Pacific Theater during WWII. On October 17, 1946 he was united in marriage to Gayle Maxine Ulin in Rock Island, she died on December 1, 1984. On June 7, 1986 he was united in marriage to Jeanette Mundt in Winterset. Hoddy has lived in the Wellman and West Chester communities all of his life where he worked as a mason. He built his own business from the ground up after growing up in abject poverty. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wellman. He served on the Wellman city council for several years in the 1970's. Hoddy enjoyed woodworking, making model ships, raising tropical fish and guppies, and had a lifelong passion for raising pigeons. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Hoddy passed away on Monday, July 30, 2018 at his home in West Chester at the age of 94 years.
Hoddy is survived by his wife Jeanette of West Chester; a son, Randy Allen of Wellman; 2 daughters, Julie (Dan) Reschly of Keota, Linda (Denny) Dawson of Wellman; son-in-law Steve Clark of Iowa City; daughter-in-law Tarin Bickford of Oregon; 6 step children, Diana (Gary) Carroll of Brighton, Donna (Kevin) Blair of Griswold, Jeff (Tamara) Holtmyer of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jerry (Barbara) Holtmyer of Washington, Denise (Mike) Peiffer of Washington, Deb (Marty) Vohs of Moville, 17 grandchildren, 14 step grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 11 step great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Maxine, a daughter Deborah Clark, grandson Christopher Allen, a step granddaughter Mamie Blair, 4 great grandchildren Canaan Reschly, baby Chavez, Abjiah Reschly and Asael Reschly, 3 sisters and 5 brothers.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, August 2, 2018 at the First Baptist Church in Wellman. Pastor Mark Larson will officiate. Burial will be in the Wassonville Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 PM on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established for Wassonville Cemetery. www.powellfuneralhomes.com
