Williamsburg-Hilda Gertrude Driscoll was born December 6, 1919, near Watkins in Benton County, Iowa, the youngest of five children born to Joseph Charles and Gertrude (Schmuecker) Schmidt. She attended schools at Norway graduating from Norway High School. Hilda was employed at Watkins Savings Bank and Armstrong's Department Store in Cedar Rapids. Hilda was united in marriage to Vincent Edmund Driscoll on October 20, 1943 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Watkins. The new couple made their home in Williamsburg where Hilda worked for Smith Motor and with her husband Vinnie and sister Pauline at The Little Chicago Café. Later, she established Hilda's Photography and Flowers, working as a professional photographer and florist. Hilda received many awards for her photography. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and past member of the Altar and Rosary Society and The Order of Catholic Foresters. She enjoyed her family, antiques and worked with ceramics in her later years. In failing health for a number of years, Hilda was cared for at Highland Ridge Care Center and the English Valley Care Center where she passed away on the morning of Sunday, June 7, 2015 at the age of 95 years. The family thanks those who helped care for Hilda.
Hilda is survived by her children: Daniel (Janet) of Iowa City, Diana (Jamie) Yoss of Ankeny and David (Joleen) of Williamsburg; 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Vincent in 1987, two brothers: Paul and Zeno Schmidt and two sisters: Leova Arp and Pauline Lillis.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Fr. Joseph Roost will preside. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A Rosary will be said at 5:00 on Tuesday. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
