Helen Janette Yoder was born November 2, 1920, in rural Wellman, Iowa, the
daughter of William and Naomi (Hooley) Slaubaugh. She attended Hickory Grove
School and graduated from Center High School. After attending a Cedar Falls
summer session, she taught rural school for five years. On June 6, 1946, she
was united in marriage to Paul E.M. Yoder at the West Union Mennonite
Church. They lived in the Wellman and North English communities, farming
until 1980. They directed Mennonite Voluntary Service units in Brownsville
and San Antonio, Texas, for four years, and returned to Wellman in 1984.
Helen was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church. Helen died on Monday,
July 14, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 93 years.
Helen is survived by two daughters Kathleen (Roger) Erteld of Buhler,
Kansas; Christine (Rafael) Falcón of Goshen, Indiana; two sons Phil Yoder of
Detroit, Michigan; Orie (Linda) Yoder of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren
(Sharon Entz, Wendy Bost, Bryan Falcón, Brent Falcón, Elaine Yoder, Erica
Yoder, Jesse Yoder); five great-grandchildren (Becca, David, and Leah Entz,
Willow and Sebastian Falcón); and a sister Beulah Miller of Wellman. She was
preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul E. M. Yoder in November
2003, a sister Emily Blosser, and a brother Dwight Slaubaugh.
A memorial fund has been established for Crooked Creek Christian Camp.
