Helen Heusinkveld

March 14, 1930 — October 6, 2016

KALONA - Helen Joan Heusinkveld was born March 14, 1930 in Story City, Iowa, the daughter of Gerhard (Guy) and Cornelia Theodora (Jacobson) Rod. She graduated form Story City High School, attended Waldorf College and graduated from Luther College with a BSN. On June 6, 1957 Helen was united in marriage to Edwin Heusinkveld at the Immanuel Luther Church in Story City. They lived in Iowa City; Big Rapids, Michigan; Springfield, Ohio; Urbandale; West Des Moines; and have lived in Kalona since December 2012. Helen worked as a nurse at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City and was a private care giver for many years. She was a member of the St Stephen Lutheran Church in Urbandale where she sang in the choir, and was active with the hospitality committee. She spent much of her time volunteering with disability services. Helen died on Thursday, October 6, 2016, at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 86 years.
Helen is survived by 3 sons: David (Gail) Heusinkveld of Kalona; John Heusinkveld of Tomahawk, Wisconsin; Mark Heusinkveld of Des Moines; 4 grandchildren: Evan (Mary Jane) Heusinkveld of Elkhart, Indiana; Kari Heusinkveld of Kalona; Molly Heusinkveld of Kalona; Julianna Heusinkveld of Winona, Minnesota; 2 great granddaughters: Brooklyn and Zoey Heusinkveld of Elkhart, Indiana; and a sister Myrle Shaw of Story City. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ed, a sister Glendora Proctor; and a brother Myron Rod.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 8, 2016 at the First Mennonite Church in Iowa City where the family will greet friends from 10:00 AM until service time. Pastor Jim Grossnickle-Batterton and Chaplains John King and Dianne Brenneman officiating. A graveside Service will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday at the Story City Cemetery in Story City with Pastor Dan Kuchuck officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:30-6:30 PM on Friday, October 7, 2016 at the Friendship Center at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for Pleasantview Home and Mosaic (Lutheran based for services for people with intellectual disabilities).
