Helen E. Burkenbine, age 83, of Oskaloosa and formerly South English, died at Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa, following a long illness on Friday, September 21, 2007. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday September 25, 2007, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English, IA with Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be in the South English Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in North English on Monday, September 24, 2007 from 6 PM to 8 PM. She is survived by sons: Harley (Linda) Burkenbine of Salina, KS and Tracy Burkenbine (Patricia Barger) of Oskaloosa, IA; 7 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Cleo Rathmel of Iowa City, IA. A memorial fund has been established for the First Baptist Church of South English and the North English Community Center. Helen Elizabeth Burkenbine was born on November 27, 1923, southwest of Wellman, IA, the daughter of George and Jessie Kelley Schauf. She was united in marriage to Lynn Dale Burkenbine on November 26, 1941 in Kahoka, MO. They made their home in South English. Helen had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Wellman and later transferred to the First Baptist Church in South English. Helen enjoyed helping others, helping with her church, cooking, canning from her garden, traveling, and camping when health permitted. She enjoyed both picture and crossword puzzles. She moved to Maple Ridge Assisted Living near Oskaloosa, IA in 2004. Recently she become a resident of Pleasant Park in Oskaloosa. She died following a long illness on Friday, September 21, 2007, at Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa. Helen lived 83 years, 9 months and 25 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in August 1994, a son Dennis Burkenbine, daughter Helen Louise Sargent; grand daughter Sandra Burkenbine; brothers Doyle, Everette, and Richard Schauf; a sister Sylvia Rhodes; daughters-in-law Michelle Burkenbine and Mary Burkenbine.
