Hazel Burden

January 19, 1909 — May 24, 2008

Hazel I. Burden, 99, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Arbor Court. Open visitation will be held from 12:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at the Olson- Powell Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. at the Forest Home Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Pleasant View Mennonite Church. Born January 19, 1909, in Milford, NE, Hazel Iona was the daughter of Chris and Nancy Jantzi Schweitzer. Hazel lived near Milford and attended the rural school there. On June 20, 1926, she married Floyd D. Burden. He preceded her in death on August 4, 2003. After their marriage, the couple lived on a farm near Milford for fifteen years. They moved to South English, IA, in 1940, and in 1949, moved to Mt. Pleasant. Hazel was a mother, a housewife, and a farmwife who helped her husband on the family farm. The couple lived on the farm until 1967, at which time they purchased an acreage and lived there until moving into Mt. Pleasant several years later. The couple was able to live in their own home until April of 2002. Hazel was a member of the Pleasant View Mennonite Church. She enjoyed gardening and needle work and made quilts and many doll outfits. Mrs. Burden is survived by one daughter, Jean and her husband Vernon Roth of Mt. Pleasant; three sons, Kenneth Burden and his wife Betty of New London, IA, Bill Burden and his wife Jean of Conroe, TX, and Gary Burden and his wife Cathy of Morning Sun, IA; two daughter-in-laws, Rosemary Burden and Patricia Burden, both of Mt. Pleasant, IA; twenty seven grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Along with her husband and parents, Mrs. Burden was preceded in death by four sons, Lowell, Dick, Jack, and Bob Burden; one brother, Rudy Schweitzer; four sisters, Gladys Stutzman, Norma Roth, Barb Birkey, and Gertie Kremer; a grandson, Kerry Burden; and two infant grandchildren.
