WELLMAN - Hazel (Funston) Benson was born to Clarence Roy Funston and Martha Perle (Perrin) Funston on August 21, 1925. She was married to Ward Newton Benson from February 14, 1951 to his home going on June 19, 1990. She joined him and her risen Savior, Jesus Christ on Easter morning, April 21, 2019.
She is survived by her sons, David Benson of Plano, IA and Carl Benson of Brighton, IA; her daughter Marthetta "Marti" Owen (Scott) of Gilbert, IA ; five grandchildren - Eric Benson, T.J, Owen, Beth Allen (Dan), Bekah Lamb (Nate) and Joy Dayton (Andrew); two step grandchildren - Buddy Boulton, Josie Boulton and five great grandchildren.
Hazel served as a one-room school house teacher and farmed alongside her husband for over 25 years. She was a member of Prairie Flower Baptist for 68 years helping them start the church library, serving as a deacon's wife, teaching in children's groups and doing behind the scenes ministries of praying and sending cards of encouragement.
She was an avid reader and an excellent resource on grammar, history, and many other subjects.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Prairie Flower Baptist Church in rural Washington. Pastor David Cotner and Pastor Scott Owen will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8 PM on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established for the Prairie Flower Baptist Church.
