Harry Lee West, age 77, died on June 29, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a short illness. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Pastor Eric Nygren officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 PM to 8 PM on Monday, July 2, 2007 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Mercy Hospital Intensive Care Unit. Harry Lee West was born on November 26, 1929 in North English, IA the son of Ike and Laurine Trusler West, He grew up in the Delta and What Cheer communities. Harry joined the Army when he was 17 years old. On November 6, 1950, he married Leona M. Veach in Eureka Springs, AR. Harry served in Korea, Vietnam and Japan. Harry retired in 1972 having served nearly 24 years in the military. He and Leona moved back to North English and he worked 6 years as a foreman at Amana Refrigeration. They lived a number of years in Arizona before moving to the Parnell, IA area in 1999. Leona preceded him in death in November 2003. Harry died on June 29, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a short illness. He lived 77 years, 7 months and 3 days. He is survived by 5 sons: Larry West (Donna) of Nashville, TN; Alan West (Myrna) of Williamsburg, IA; Dwight West (Wanda) of Sigourney, IA; Ron West of Hills, IA; and Terry West (Julie) of Williamsburg, IA; 28 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; a brother Joseph Leroy West of Troy, TX; half-sisters: Collette Fehlberg of Peculiar, MO; Colleen Morgan of Sigourney, IA; Peggy Kauffman (Larry) of Kalona, IA; half-brothers Alvin Acord Jr. of Wellman, IA; and Mitchell Acord of North Liberty, IA. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son David West, a daughter Doris While, and a sister Helen Bates.
