Harold Syfert, 97, of Hillsboro, IA, died Sunday, October 15, 2006, at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon on Wednesday, October 18, 2006, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 19, 2006, at the Salem Friends Church with Pastor Nathan Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Salem East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Salem East Cemetery and to the Salem Friends Church. Harold was born on May 1, 1909, in Keosauqua, IA, the son of James and Lily Warner Syfert. He grew up in rural Keosauqua where he attended country school. On July 21, 1943, he married Helen M. Watson in the Christian Church parsonage in Ottumwa, IA. Mr. Syfert was a farmer and sheep shearer. He sheared all over southeast Iowa and out West in Wyoming and Montana. He lived in rural Salem for 33 years, later moving to Fairfield where he lived for six years. The Syferts then moved to Hillsboro where they have lived for more than 20 years. He attended the Salem Friends Church. Harold loved being outdoors. He enjoyed turkey hunting, fishing and trapping. Mr. Syfert is survived by his wife, Helen of Hillsboro, IA; two sons Carroll Syfert and his wife Jeanette of Salem, and Doyle Syfert and his wife Nancy of Salem; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Rex Syfert and his wife Elouise of Keosauqua, IA; and by three sisters, Kathryn and her husband Keith Beer of Marion, IA, Ruth Stansberry of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Mary and her husband Don Bradfield of Birmingham, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Lily Syfert; one daughter Louise Pickard; two brothers Martin and Glen Syfert, and one sister Rita Jeffrey.
