Harold Robert Kessel was born April 10, 1927 in Brighton, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Elsie (Ledger) Kessel. On May 9, 1946 he was united in marriage to Jean Bottger in Pleasant Plain. They lived in Brighton, Ollie, North English, Joetown and in Kalona since 1992. Harold has been a resident of Parkview Manor in Wellman since 2008. Harold farmed and also worked as a custodian for Mid-Prairie Community School District for over 30 years retiring in 1991. Harold and Jean enjoyed spending time riding their beloved horses, and traveling in their motorhome to far parts of the country. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. Harold died on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 86 years. Harold is survived by his loving wife Jean of 66 years; three daughters - Carol Wilson (Jim), Connie Kessel, Nancy Townsend (Jim) all of Wellman; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a sister - Beatrice Reynolds of Panora; ; and three brothers - Eugene Kessel of Ollie; Carroll Kessel of Davenport; and Dwight Kessel of Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant grandson Timothy Aaron; two brothers Clyde and Howard; and two sisters Isabelle Rich and Marion Wonderlich. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond with Rev. David Brownfield, Ph D officiating. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-7 PM on Friday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where a Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 PM. A memorial fund has been established for Washington County Hospice.
