Harold Eugene "Sparky" Sparrowgrove

Harold Eugene “Sparky” Sparrowgrove, age 87, of Marengo, passed away Friday, July 12, 2019, at the University of Iowa Hospital. Private graveside services will be held, with military honors, at the Marengo Cemetery. Rev. Diane Vorhies will be officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, July 15, 2019, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.

Harold was survived by two daughters, Michele Sparrowgrove, of Cedar Rapids and Sandra Koenig (Lorne), of Marengo; eleven grandchildren, Marcia Kilgard (Luke) of Williamsburg, Clay Koenig (Kiley) of Marengo, Tiffany Kriegel (Joe) of Marengo, Cassie Bunkers (Matt) of Marion, Cole Koenig of Marengo, Cale Koenig of Marengo, Chris Sparrowgrove (Tanya) of Ladora, Molli Sparrowgrove, of New Boston, IL, Zach Worcel, of Cedar Rapids, Trevor Worcel, of Cedar Rapids and Dylan Worcel, of Iowa City; many great-great grandchildren; and a sister Ella Mae VanBennekom, of Marengo. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marcia in 2012 and a daughter Cheryl in 2016.

Harold was born March 5, 1932, in Marengo, the son of Archie and Minnie (Beard) Sparrowgrove. While in the U.S. Navy, he married Marcia Beardsley on May 30, 1956, in Salome, AZ. After moving back to Marengo, Harold was employed by Rhinehart’s, driving dump truck, and later worked for Marengo Ready Mix for 30 plus years and finally retiring. He loved caring for his many horses and making guns. He enjoyed watching western movies and making his cowboy stew and hobo dinners.
