HAYESVILLE-Harold Junior Bird, age 83, of Hayesville, died of liver failure on Friday, March 28, 2008, at his home. Harold was born May 30, 1924, in Belle Plaine, Iowa to Jerry and Eathyl (White) Bird. He grew up in Delta and attended Delta High School. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. On July 22, 1948, he married Hazel Woods. Harold worked for the Keokuk County Highway Department for over 30 years and ran a salvage yard in Hayesville for over 40 years. Harold was a member of the American Legion in Delta and enjoyed coon hunting, squirrel hunting, mushroom hunting, fishing, frog legs, spending time with family, wintering in Texas for 21 years and traveling to California, Alaska, Hawaii and many other states. He also loved sports, especially football and wrestling, being instrumental in starting the junior high football program in Sigourney. Survivors include his wife: Hazel of Hayesville; seven children: Cindy Kolosick and husband Joe of Marion, Larry Bird and wife Mary of Sigourney, Monte Bird and wife Nancy of Sigourney, Beverly Muntz and husband Randy of Pekin, Roger Bird and friend Linda of Sigourney, Tim Bird and wife Denise of Vinton and Tracy Okones and husband Lance of Sigourney; 24 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; three brothers: Bob of Riverside, California, Don of What Cheer and Lenny of Marengo and one sister: Dorothy Crook of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother: Jesse. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Hope Lutheran Church in Sigourney with Vince Homan officiating. Burial will be at Pennington Cemetery in rural Sigourney. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. A general memorial fund has been established. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
