Williamsburg- Harlan Arthur Schwarting was born July 9, 1946 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Clifford Arthur & Bess Marie (Jordt) Schwarting. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy and was a graduate of Williamsburg High School. He served in the United States Army from1968-1970 and the Army Reserves for 6 years. Harlan was united in marriage to Leota Irene Hamer on September 21, 1968, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg. He was a truck driver for Ron Hummer Trucking for over 30 years. Harlan was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy and the Oxford American Legion. He loved to golf and spend time with his family. Harlan passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, surrounded by his family at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, at the age of 68 years.
He is survived by his wife Leota of Williamsburg; a son Art (Denise) Schwarting of Iowa City; a daughter Becky (Tony) Byrd of Oxford; five grandchildren: Ronnie, Seth, Christian and Kendra Schwarting of Iowa City and Kelsey Schwarting of Oxford; two brothers: Gary (Leanne) Schwarting of Oxford and Allen (Linda) Schwarting of Williamsburg; an Uncle Duane (Darlene) Schwarting of Homestead; special friends: Jim & Diann Gowin of Williamsburg and Randy & Linda Kramer of South Dakota; sister-in-law Fran (Ken) DeMarce of Cedar Rapids; two brothers-in-law Richard Hamer of Marion and Larry Hamer of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents; brothers-in-law Ron Hamer and Ray Hamer and mother-in-law Lorine Hamer.
Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. Rev. Gary Sears and Rev. Brent Hartwig will officiate. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Conroy. Visitation will be on Monday, from 4-7 PM at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. A general memorial fund has been established.
