Grace Emily Brower was born on September 16, 1921, near South English, IA, the daughter of Cyrus McPherson and Bertha Smith Robison. She graduated from South English High School and attended William Penn College where she received her teaching certificate. Grace taught 2 years in rural schools. On October 5, 1940, she married Charles Henry Brower at her parents home near South English. Grace was a member of the English River Church of the Brethren where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was also a member of the Keokuk County Historical Society. Grace was a homemaker, seamstress and a toy maker. She sponsored several children through the Christian Children's Fund for many years. Grace died following a brief illness on Friday, June 1, 2007 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She lived 85 years, 8 months and 16 days. She is survived by five children: Charles Douglas Brower (Gloria) of Rochester, MN; Gregory Brower (Kathy) of Richland, IA; Kevin Brower (Dorie) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Keith Brower (Shari) of Burlington, IA; and Lori Phillips (Oren) of Pella, IA; a son-in-law John Semonco of Fulton, MD; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. Grace was preceded in death by her parents, husband in January 2001, a daughter Carolyn Semonco in September 2006, a grandson John Semonco Jr. and a brother David Emerson Robison.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 PM Sunday, June 3, 2007 at the English River Church of the Brethren near South English, IA. The Rev. Beth Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 PM on Saturday, June 2, 2007, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English.
