Glenn S. Hershberger was born February 11, 1929 in rural Wellman, Iowa, the son of Simon and Barbara (Bender) Hershberger. Glenn graduated from IMS in 1948. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. On March 27, 1955 Glenn was united in marriage to Phyllis Whetstine at the Wellman Mennonite Church. They have lived in the Wellman community since 1965. Glenn drove truck for Ruan, PIE and JB Hunt trucking, and then was an insurance agent for Menno Services in Kalona from 1988 until retiring in 1993. Glenn was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church were he was an Elder, taught Sunday School and was Sunday School Superintendent. He was a licensed airplane pilot, enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, golfing, bowling, and reading about flying. Glenn died Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa at the age of 85 years.
Glenn is survived by his wife Phyllis, four children: Rob L. Hershberger of Pompano Beach, FL, Janice (Rodney) Wenger of Wayland, IA, Sandra (Edward) Allen of Newport News, VA and Steven (Catherine) Hershberger of Bettendorf, IA; eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two sisters: Mary Ellen Miller of Boerne, TX, Norma Jean (Joe) Hostetler of Hesston, KA, two brothers: Paul Hershberger of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Carroll Hershberger of West Liberty, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister Verda Miller and two brothers: John and James Hershberger.
Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Wellman Mennonite Church in Wellman. Pastor Nathan Ramer will officiate. Visitation will be held from 3-7 pm on Friday at the Wellman Mennonite Church. A memorial fund has been established for the Wellman Mennonite Church. The Powell Funeral Home in Wellman is in charge of the arrangements.
