Gertrude Vittetoe was born on October 29, 1912 near Sigourney, Iowa the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Haupert) Herman. She graduated from Sigourney High School in 1930. After gradaution she taught school in the Sigourney School District. On April 30, 1935 she was married to Francis Vittetoe at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney. They farmed in the Harper and Oskaloosa communities, before moving to the Keota farm in 1947 where they raised their family of eight children. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish St. Mary Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society of Keota. Gertrude died on Friday, March 3, 2006 at Maplewood Manor in Keota surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 93 years. Gertrude is survived by 8 children; Marilyn Luttenegger of Keota, Barbara Stanaway and husband Richard of Anamosa, Darlene Sieren and husband Eugene of Harper, David Vittetoe and wife Karen of Keota, Marjorie Millane and husband James of Fairfield, Mildred Sieren and husband LaVerne of Keota, Teresa Kruse and husband Don of Spirit Lake, Bernard Vittetoe and wife Mary of Keota; 25 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and a brother Raymond Herman of Sigourney. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Francis in 1967, 2 sons-in-law John Luttenegger and Donald Wheeler; and 2 brothers Willie and Earl Herman.
