KEOTA-Gertrude Kiefer, age 98, of Keota, died Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at the Washington County Hospital in Washington, following a brief illness. Gertrude was born June 28, 1908, in Harper, to Peter and Katherine (Ludwig) Rettler and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School. She taught at Talleyrand and was a cook at Maplewood Manor for 13 years. On June 27, 1935, she married Leo Kiefer in Harper. Gertrude was a founding member of the Talleyrand Ladies Social Club and enjoyed cooking and baking. Survivors include five children: Gerald Kiefer and wife Lois of Aurora, Colorado, Donna Greiner of Packwood, Connie Carey and husband John of Washington, Paulette Stilson and husband Lloyd of Port Charlotte, Florida and Roger Kiefer and wife Susan Mahoney of Iowa City; 12 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Leo in 1991; infant daughter: Judith Anne; two sons: Leo and John Rettler; one grandson: Brian Kiefer; one granddaughter: Vicki Briner three sisters: Mary Greiner, Margaret Greiner and Mona Snakenberg and two brothers: Leo and George Rettler. A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2006, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Wilson Memorial Library in Keota. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
