SOUTH ENGLISH- Gertrude Ada Powell, was born on April 1, 1916, in Blandon, Iowa, the daughter of Noah D. & Kate (Egli) Kauffman. She graduated from Rockwell City High School in 1934. On June 26, 1938, she was united in marriage to John S. Powell at her parents home in Manson, Iowa. She grew up in the Manson community, after their marriage the couple moved to a farm south of South English in 1940. Gertrude and John owned and operated Powell Hardware in South English from 1962 to 1981. She was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church and Federated Womens Club. Gertrude enjoyed gardening, working on the farm and spending time with her grandchildren. Gertrude died on Thursday, March 12, 2009, at the English Valley Care Center in North English, following an brief illness at the age of 92 years. She is survived by her son Daniel Powell of South English; a daughter Kathleen (Richard) Troyer of Waxhaw, NC; 3 grandchildren: Cynthia (Bill) Yearous, Angela Troyer (Sean O'Conner) and Richard (Christie) Troyer Jr.; 8 great grandchildren: Jacob Powell Yearous, Kathryn Yearous, Emma Yearous, Graham Troyer O'Conner, Ellen Troyer O'Conner, Grace Troyer, BenjaminTroyer, John Troyer and Clara Troyer; 2 sisters: Grace Nachtigal and Edith Piper both of Iowa City, IA; 3 brothers: Roy Kauffman of Princeton, IL, Dan Kauffman of Boxholm, IA and Walter Kauffman of Lincoln, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John in 1999; a brother Joe Kauffman; and 2 sisters: Rose Mason and Marian Jones. Celebration of Life Service will be held_2:00 pm on Saturday, March 14 , 2009, at the Wellman Mennonite Church. Rev. Marvin Hostetler will officiate.
