Gerald William Newberry, 90, died November 27, 2010 at the English Valley Care Center in North English. He was born on June 27, 1920, west of Millersburg, Iowa, the son of John and Vera Churchill Newberry. Gerald graduated from the North English High School in 1938. He served in the US Army from 1942-1945 during World War II. He married Greta Ballard on December 20, 1941, in Kirksville, Missouri. On returning from the war, he started farming and farmed for over 60 years. Gerald is survived by his wife Greta of North English; children: Eldon (Nancy) Newberry of Amana; Daryl (Joan) Newberry and Karl Newberry both of North English; Lynette (Dan) Rickels of Anamosa; 7 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Loren in 1946; his parents; sisters Hazel O'Brien, Helen Huston, Marvel Olson and a brother Mace Humphrey. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Rev. Michelle Williamson will officiate. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 30th form 4 PM to 7 PM. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. A general memorial fund has been established.
