Gerald "Jerry" Nafziger was born November 20, 1935, near Kalona, Iowa the son of Chris and Amanda Nafziger. He graduated from Iowa Mennonite High School in 1955. On August 19, 1961 he was united in marriage to Doris Gingerich and they made their home in Iowa City. Jerry spent most of his adult life working in the automotive world and was presently working at Pyramid Services. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church. He was an avid lover of antique and classic cars especially the Corvair. Jerry died Thursday, January 13, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City of cardiac complications at the age of 75 years. Jerry is survived by his wife Doris of Iowa City; a son Jeff Nafziger and fiancé Shannon of Iowa City; a daughter Janelle Cheuvront and husband Randy of Vienna, West Virginia; four grandchildren - Joe (Amy) Cheuvront, Jessica Cheuvront, Delaney McMahon, Nick McMahon; two great grandsons - Sylas and Elias Cheuvront; a brother - Gary (Frankie) Nafziger of Wellman; three sisters - Sandra (Gilbert) Cardinal of Mesa, AZ; Nadine (Felex) Arriaga of Mesa, AZ; Carol (Dick) Harper of Willamina, OR; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step mother - Mary Gerig Nafziger and his in-laws Clark and Louisa Gingerich. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 16, 2011 at First Mennonite Church at 405 Myrtle Drive in Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m. on Saturday at First Mennonite Church and one hour prior to the service on Sunday. A memorial fund has been established for First Mennonite Church and the Old Car Museum of Iowa. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.
