George E. Yaley, 78, of rural New London, IA, passed away Friday, September 25, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from complications due to leukemia, with his family by his side. Visitation will be held from 12:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Suday, September 27th, at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. that afternoon. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 28th, at 10:30 a.m., at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel, with Pastor David Plooster officiating. Born December 13, 1936, in rural New London, IA, George Elbert was the son of Eugene Hayes and Edith Mae Blint Yaley. He obtained his education from the Mt. Pleasant Community School District. As a young man, George joined the Iowa National Guard and served for ten years. On January 12, 1958, he married Irma Jean Breuer at the Methodist Church in Danville, IA. A Henry County resident, George's first job was for a construction firm. With a lifetime passion for agriculture, George worked for Tri-State Fertilizer, before purchasing the family farm which he farmed for his entire adult life. He was always interested in history, antiques, and artifacts. George had a keen memory and never met a stranger. He loved his family and friends and appreciated spending time with them. George shared his love of the outdoors and nature with those around him. An avid fisherman and hunter, he especially liked coyote hunting. He was a volunteer for the Danville Fire Department and a Des Moines County Saddle Club member, along with serving on the Henry County Cattleman's Association Board. George was a former 4-H leader. He thoroughly enjoyed camping, old time country music festivals, tractor pulls, and wintering in Harlingen, TX. Along with his wife, Irma, of 57 years, George is survived by a daughter, Teresa (Dick) Mertens of Mt. Pleasant, IA; two sons, Mitch (Melodee) Yaley of Sealy, TX, and Tim (Karry) Yaley of New London, IA; and four sisters, Bertha Ann Pickle of New London, IA; Velna (Ed) Smith of Salem, IA, Carol (Dean) Anderson of New London, IA, and Marlene (Dick) Lenz of New London, IA; and two brothers, Merle Yaley of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Marvin (Janice) Yaley of Mt. Pleasant, IA. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Zach Mertens, Laura (Alex) Ross, Mike Yaley, Elaina Mertens, Steven Yaley, Tad Mertens, Justin Yaley, Jordan Yaley, Daniel Yaley, Philip Yaley, Shyla Hiler, and Olivia Boyles and 2 great-grandchildren, Brynleigh Ross and Maxwell Ross.
