KALONA - George E. Fry was born May 3, 1932, near Frytown, Iowa, the son of George V. and Nellie (Crow) Fry. He graduated from Kalona High School in 1950. He enlisted in the Army and served his country as a paratrooper from 1950-1953 in the Korean War. After returning home he attended Iowa State Teachers College. On August 24, 1957, George was united in marriage to Harriet Berg at the United Christian Baptist Church in Kalona. George worked at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City for over 30 years as chief of supply. He was a member of the United Christian Baptist Church, Richmond AmVets, Charles Polton American Legion, and the VFW in Riverside. George enjoyed going to dances with Harriet, and singing. He sang in the Old Capital Chorus for many years. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, nightly board meetings, playing cards, golfing, and cheering for the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. George passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at the English Valley Care Center in North English at the age of 86 years.
George is survived by two daughters: Connie (Bob) Andersen of Kalona and Tracy (Kenton) Jones of Parnell; 5 grandchildren: Erin (Bob) Froeschner, Jenna Hayes, Sara (Robert) Mulhauser, Kyle (Stacy) Jones and Trent Jones; 6 great grandchildren: Jayme Hayes, Lucas Froeschner, Clara Froeschner, Chloe Froeschner, Elizabeth Jones and Cora Jones; a sister Delores Paulsen of Iowa City and a brother Daryl Fry of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Harriet, two brothers, Earl and Arlo Fry, and two sisters: Vera Semler and Alene Millice.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 am Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. Burial will be in the Sharon Hill Cemetery with military rites by the Richmond AmVets. Visitation will be Monday, November 12, 2018, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the Richmond AmVets and Iowa City Hospice.
