George C. Phanthouvong

George C. Phanthouvong, 82, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Saturday, April 29, 2017, in Henry County Health Center Emergency Room. Visitation with the family present will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017, from 12 noon until 1:00 p.m., at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel of Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, at the Olson~Powell Chapel. Cremation will be accorded following the service. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. Born in Luang Prabang, Laos, on April 1, 1935, George Chansamoot was the son of Thit Phou and Nang Onh Phanthouvong. He spent his formative years in Laos and attended Lycee in Vientiane, Laos. At age 20, on May 12, 1955, George began a long career with the Laotian Army. In 1970, he came to the United States to take the Senior Foreign Officer Intelligence course at the U.S. Army Intelligence School in Fort Holabird, Maryland. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1973, he had attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonial.On December 15, 1957, he married Laied Homsomsavang in Vientaine, Laos. The family moved to the United States in 1989, where George became a U.S.citizen in 1996. He worked at Metro Group as a machine operator and technician. He retired from that position in 2001. George loved wood carving, woodworking and gardening. He found great pleasure in drawing and was steadfast in his endeavors to research and record his family history.Along with his wife, of sixty years, George is survived by ten children, Xaiyavong Phanthouvong of Rhode Island, Viengxai Phanthouvong of Laos, Viengsavan Phanthouvong of Laos, Xaisana Phanthouvong of Burlington, IA, Xaisavath Phanthouvong of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Viengsamai McCarty of Salem, IA, Viengvilai Keomanivong of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Xaisavang Phanthouvong of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Xaisouly Phanthouvong of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Viengvilavan Phanthouvong of Mt. Pleasant, IA. He is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents.
