Gene Orren Morgan was born on the farm in rural Brooklyn on April 27, 1934, to Robert Menzo Morgan and Virginia Elizabeth (Lytle) Morgan. His mom always joked about how they paid the doctor with chickens and some produce from her garden. Gene attended school in rural Brooklyn, Scott #8 School through eighth grade and then graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1952. He served in the United States Army from 1955-1957 and served in Korea as a clerk. On July 12, 1986, he married Joyce (Maschmann) Douglas and acquired a ready-made family from this union. Gene farmed from the time he returned home from the Army until his retirement. He loved raising cattle and continued doing that until he turned 80. He worked for Farm Service in rural Brooklyn for 19 years. He was a member of the Brooklyn American Legion, the Masons and Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn. He loved being a farmer, raising cattle, traveling with Joyce, playing cards and watching the Green Bay Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes play football. Gene especially loved his time with family and friends, dogs and barn cats.
