KESWICK - Gary Dean Fowler was born October 16, 1946 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of James Henry & Dora Mae (Walker) Fowler. In 1964, he graduated from Montgomery High School in Montgomery, Louisiana. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1964. Gary served honorably as a United States Army Airborne Infantryman/Paratrooper with both the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, with combat operations in Vietnam.
On February 16, 1968 Gary was united in marriage to Maria Petronella Geertje Beekman in Zwolle, The Netherlands. Over the course of over 49 years of marriage, Gary and Mary lived in Brussels, Belgium; Zwolle, The Netherlands; Rosenburg, Texas; Green Bay, Wisconsin and Keswick, Iowa. Gary also attended both Louisiana State University and Indian Hills College.
Gary was a member of the Webster United Methodist Church and the Keswick James Murphy American Legion Post #319.
He enjoyed traveling, camping, photography, and riding bicycles with friends and family in Holland, France, and numerous other countries across Europe. Gary also immensely enjoyed attending his grandchildren's broad range of extracurricular activities to include basketball and softball games, wrestling matches, horse shows, and numerous other activities.
Gary died on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, having attained the age of 70 years.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife of over 49 years Mary of Keswick; a son Douglas (Keely) Fowler of Saint Robert, Missouri; a daughter Anya Fairchild of Sigourney; seven grandchildren: Dustin (Sheena) Kiner of Crocker, Missouri; Kyle (Ajani Finley) Fowler of Lebanon, Missouri; Keysha (Tyler Smith) Fowler of Saint Robert, Missouri; Alexander Fowler of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Katharinna (Jarid) Bain of Sigourney, Iowa; Adrianna (Darin Banes) Fairchild of North English, Iowa; and Madison (Cody Kreutz) Fairchild of Rochester, Minnesota; 10 great grandchildren; and four brothers: Beau (Jessica) Fowler of Montgomery, Louisiana; Terry (Rita) Fowler of Le Claire, Iowa; Danny Fowler of Sigourney, Iowa; and Tony (Kelli) Fowler of Dry Prong, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Georgia Herrmann and a brother Kenneth Herrmann.
Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the Webster United Methodist Church, Webster. Rev. Charles Klink will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Powell Funeral Home, North English. Memorials are for the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
