Williamsburg- Garth Allyn Livingston was born February 14,1946, in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Edward and Thelma (Roberts) Livingston. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1964. After graduation he worked for the Iowa County Engineer as a surveyor before being drafted to serve in the United States Army from 1966 – 1968 and was stationed in Germany. When he returned from service he worked at Amana Refrigeration and Livingston Clothing. Garth was united in marriage to Mary Lee Waters on May 30, 1970, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. He later purchased Livingston Clothing in Williamsburg, which he owned and operated for many years. After selling his store he worked at Tanger Mall for several years. His last employment was as a storekeeper at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, retiring in 2010. Garth served on the Williamsburg Fire Department for 10 years and was a lifetime member of Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 in Williamsburg. He enjoyed hunting with his “Deer Camp” buddies, fishing trips to Canada, golfing, wintering in Arizona and spending time with his family. Garth died Friday, May 31, 2024, at his home at the age of 78 after a lengthy illness.
He is survived by his wife Mary; two daughters, Michele Covington of Chandler, AZ and Melissa (Mike) Errthum of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Courtney Covington (fiancé Tanner Todd) of Chandler, AZ, Mason Covington, currently serving in the United States Army, Emma Errthum and Ella Errthum, both of Williamsburg; a brother Tom (Diane) Livingston of North Liberty and a sister, Fran Munson of Williamsburg, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, half siblings Dean Livingston, Eugene Livingston, Iola Weekly, Leona Klever, Joyce Stangland, Melvin Livingston, Bruce Freeman, Dorothy Hulgan and Jean Doehrmann, and two nephews Doug Livingston and Dick Munson.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 am on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Visitation will be Friday, June 7, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. There will be a VFW Service at 7:00 pm.
