HARPER-Gale Hotchkiss, age 86, of Harper, died of cancer on Friday, July 22, 2005, at the Washington County Hospital in Washington. Gale was born February 16, 1919, south of Kinross, Iowa, to James and Naomi (Thorburn) Hotchkiss. He attended Kinross High School until his parents' passing and graduated from Colfax High School in 1936. Gale served in the United States Air Force from June of 1942 until December of 1945, where he earned the rank of Sergeant. On August 18, 1944, he married Marjorie Jean Ossman at the Chatham Airfield Chapel in Savannah, Georgia. The couple lived and farmed in the Keota area and moved into Harper in 1977. Gale retired from farming in 1982. He was a former member of the Lions Club and had served as a 4-H leader and Extension Council member. Gale enjoyed his grandchildren, watching the Cubs play and visiting with family and friends. Survivors include his wife: Marjorie Hotchkiss of Harper; two children: Karen Dawson and husband Steve of Iowa City and Tom Hotchkiss and wife Billie of South English; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren and another expected soon and one sister: Mildred Miller of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter: Jill Hotchkiss; one brother: Robert and one sister: Lois Bohachaf. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Rev. Don Ridenour officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 25, 2005 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Wilson Memorial Library, Hospice of Washington County or the American Cancer Society. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
