Conroy-Frieda Marie Schmidt was born June 27, 1917 on the family farm south of Conroy, Iowa, the daughter of C. Ferd and Emilie Webert Zimmerman. She attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Conroy High School in 1935. Frieda was united in marriage to Mervin G. F. Schmidt on September 19, 1937 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Following their marriage the couple lived and farmed, Frieda's family farm from 1938 until 1973 when they moved to Conroy. She has worked as a correspondent for the Cedar Rapids Gazette and the Journal Tribune in Williamsburg since 1966. Frieda moved to Highland Ridge in Williamsburg in December of 2004. Frieda was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Ladies Guild and the Sunshine Circle. Frieda died Thursday, February 16, 2006 after a short illness at the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, Oregon where she had just moved to be close to her daughter and grandchildren at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 20 days. She is survived by her daughter: Marna and husband Terry Renshaw of Corvallis; three grandchildren: Heather Holcomb of Portland, Brian Holcomb and Sara Holcomb both of Corvallis; and a sister-in-law: Reba Schmidt of Williamsburg. Frieda is preceded in death by her parents, husband Mervin in 1998, a son Gordon in 2002, an infant brother and three sisters: Irene Huedepohl, Alma Stiles and Lorine Hamer. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Pastor Gary Sears will officiate. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 to 7:00 pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
