Kalona-Freda Alice Kurtz was born November 22, 1904 near Wellman, Iowa, the daughter of Henry G. And Alta Coffman Neis. She graduated from South English High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College. She taught rural school in Keokuk County for 7 years. Freda was united in marriage to Clarence Kurtz on August 18, 1931 in Sigourney. The couple lived one mile south of South English. After his death on September 12, 1949, she moved to South English were she was a bookkeeper for White State Bank for 22 years. Freda was an active member in the Union Church in South English, teaching Sunday school, youth leader, financial secretary and a board member. She was an avid sports enthusiast, enjoyed traveling and being with family and friends. Freda moved to North English in 1974 and then to Pleasantview Home in Kalona in 1993. Freda died Thursday, September 14, 2006 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona after an extended illness at the age of 101 years, 9 months and 23 days. She is survived by nieces and nephews: Jean Chittick, Ronald Neis, Leon Blaylock, Leita Read, Wayne Kurtz and special friends: Skip & Oz Coffman. Freda is preceded in death by her parents, husband, step son Raymond,4 sister: Hazel Durst, Velda Evans, Neva and Olive Neis and a brother: Cloyce Neis. Celebration of Life Service will be 7:00 pm Friday, September 15, 2006 at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Kalona. Pastor David L. Yoder will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:00pm until service time. Burial will be 8:00 am Saturday, September 16, 2006 at the South English Cemetery in South English.
